The US News and World Report top-two ranked UC Berkeley Department of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) trains students in materials science and engineering to develop a fundamental understanding of materials, enabling new technological breakthroughs across all engineering disciplines.
MEng in Materials Science & Engineering
The MEng program in MSE focuses on Advances in Opto-Electronic Materials, Advanced Structural Materials and Materials for Advanced Energy Systems at the nano, micro and macro scales, leading to specialization in such topics as: biomaterials; chemical and electrochemical materials science and engineering; computational materials science and engineering; electronic, magnetic and optical materials; and structural materials. Optimizing the Design and Manufacturing of Aligned Carbon Fiber
This team’s goal was to bring carbon fiber to the masses. Can a new manufacturing technique significantly reduce the price of carbon fiber and make it a viable material for a host of new applications?

Gwenlyn Angel Cabiltes, Class of 2021
Gwenlyn Angel Cabiltes is graduated from the Berkeley MEng with a focus in Materials Science & Engineering. Prior to enrolling in the MEng program, Gwenlyn earned a BS in Materials Engineering at San Jose State University. She is currently working in research and development lithography at a Bay Area semiconductor company. Here, she shares about what she’s currently studying, the impact she wishes to have on the world, and her passion for teaching.
