The Automated Composites Manufacturing team developed a novel process that will enable mass production of carbon fiber components.

Materials Science & Engineering

As a field, MSE encompasses all natural and man-made materials – their extraction, synthesis, processing, properties, characterization, and development for technological applications.

The US News and World Report top-two ranked UC Berkeley Department of Materials Science & Engineering (MSE) trains students in materials science and engineering to develop a fundamental understanding of materials, enabling new technological breakthroughs across all engineering disciplines.

MEng in Materials Science & Engineering

The MEng program in MSE focuses on Advances in Opto-Electronic Materials, Advanced Structural Materials and Materials for Advanced Energy Systems at the nano, micro and macro scales, leading to specialization in such topics as: biomaterials; chemical and electrochemical materials science and engineering; computational materials science and engineering; electronic, magnetic and optical materials; and structural materials. The MEng technical concentrations in the MSE department are:

  • General Program
  • Biomaterials
  • Advanced Structural Materials
  • Electronic, Magnetic and Optical Materials
  • Computational Materials
  • Chemical and Electrochemical Materials

Capstone Project Highlight
