Department: Bioengineering
Concentration: Bioinformatics & Computational Biology
Kate Barouch is a graduate student at UC Berkeley, pursuing an MEng in Bioengineering with a concentration in Bioinformatics & Computational Biology. Born and raised in the East Bay Area, she briefly moved to San Luis Obispo to gain her bachelor’s in biology from Cal Poly before moving back to the bay. Before discovering her passion for programming and bioinformatics, Kate gained diverse experiences utilizing her biology degree. She worked in the winery labs of Sonoma, where she applied her scientific knowledge to the art of winemaking, and in healthcare as a medical assistant in dermatology. These experiences ultimately inspired her to seek a career at the intersection of biology and technology, where she aims to apply her interdisciplinary knowledge to solve complex biological problems using computational tools.
In her free time, Kate enjoys baking, particularly crafting birthday cakes for friends and family and volunteering with Cake4Kids. She loves traveling and often finds herself planning both real and imagined future trips while relaxing at home with her cat.
