- Find the “Next Steps” section on the left hand side of the CalCentral homepage.
- Follow the instructions in CalCentral to pay your $1,500 enrollment deposit. This non-refundable deposit will be credited towards the tuition bill for your first term and will reserve your space in the program. We encourage students to pay by e-check (also known as EFT) or wire transfer. Students choosing to pay by credit card will be assessed an additional 2.75% fee.
- Q: Will my admissions offer be rescinded if my enrollment deposit isn’t processed by April 15?
A: As long as you have accepted your offer by the April 15 deadline, we assure you that your offer still stands. As soon as you receive the follow up email with your Student ID (SID), please take the steps above to pay your deposit as soon as possible. - Q: I paid my deposit via Flywire and the status is “processing.” Do I have anything to worry about?
A: If the status is still processing, that’s okay. Please check back in if it is still processing by early next week. Your admissions offer still stands as long as you have accepted your offer of admission by April 15.

Please plan to attend the program starting on Monday, August 12, 2024 for the Master of Engineering Orientation (in person and limited online events), followed by 8 days of instruction for the required Engineering Leadership Fall Boot Camp: ENGIN 270A (Organizational Behavior & Negotiations) and ENGIN 270B (R&D Technology Management & Ethics) August 13-22, 2024 (in person and online sections). This is almost two weeks before the official start of the UC Berkeley instruction.
The Fung Institute MEng Staff will host a registration webinar in June for all new MEng students to review how to register for classes in the fall. In the meantime, starting in mid-June, new graduate students at UC Berkeley can check CalCentral for their enrollment window period. The Master of Engineering degree from the University of California, Berkeley is awarded after the successful completion of 25 approved units that must be taken for a letter grade (with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0) in residence at the University of California, Berkeley. The MEng program consists of three major components, comprising a technical specialization (4 pre-approved courses), a curriculum of engineering leadership courses (8 units), and an integrative two semester capstone project (5 units). A minimum of 25 units is required.
Some programs may have higher performance standards than the minimum requirements stated by the Graduate Division. For example, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS) has higher passing grade (B-) and GPA (3.5) requirements required for graduation. Please check with your degree-granting department for further information.
Program Requirements (minimum 25 units)
The MEng Degree requires at least 25 total units of credit that must be taken for a letter grade and comprehensive exam. Those credits are allocated across three essential areas:
- 4 courses in Technical Department area of concentration
- 12-16 units depending on department
- 8 units of Fung Institute Business & Leadership classes
- 2 units of boot camp short courses in mid August
- ENGIN 270A Organizational Behavior & Negotiations
- ENGIN 270B R&D Tech Management and Ethics
- 2 units of boot camp courses in early January
- Choose 2 x 1-unit electives (Note: Electives listed below are subject to change)
- ENGIN 270D: Entrepreneurship for Engineers
- ENGIN 270G: Marketing & Product Management
- ENGIN 270H: Accounting & Finance
- ENGIN 270I: Digital Platform Strategy

- Students receive a final capstone grade at the end of Spring semester. Several weeks after receiving the final grade for E296, the spring and the fall records are reconciled and “IP” is removed.
- 2 units of boot camp short courses in mid August
- Plan II Masters Comprehensive Exam: pass both leadership and technical parts
The award will be reflected in CalCentral under “My finances” by early to mid August so long as you are enrolled in at least 1 unit for fall semester. The funds will be applied directly to your tuition and fees and divided over two semesters.
If you pay your fall tuition in full before the award is granted, then your full award will be applied in spring only. Please note a refund check cannot be issued so we strongly suggest waiting to pay your fall fees until the award/grant is applied.
For additional funding we encourage you to explore all other options for outside funding including scholarships and loans.
Official transcripts are processed by the office of graduate admissions and not our department. Please note that official transcript verification can take weeks or months as the office of graduate admission is processing transcripts for all new graduate students. The “hold” notification will remain on your CalCentral but will not impact your course enrollment for Fall. The hold will only impact spring semester enrollment if it is not resolved. Please follow the instructions listed by the office of graduate admissions to submit your official transcripts no later than October 1st.

Federal Student Loans
Federal financial aid, in the form of loans, is available for graduate students who are either US citizens or permanent residents and enrolled in a minimum of 6 units per semester. To apply, file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at any time after January 1. The FAFSA is also used to determine eligibility for need-based fellowships and departmental funding. UC Berkeley’s institution code for the FAFSA is 001312. You can apply for aid before you are admitted to Berkeley.
UC Berkeley participates in the Federal Direct Loan Program, a federally funded, non-credit-based loan program for US citizens and permanent residents. Up to $20,500 may be borrowed annually through a combination of subsidized and unsubsidized loan funds. Students wanting to borrow more than $20,500 can also use the Federal Grad PLUS Loan.
Private Loans
The UC Office of the President has compiled a comprehensive Preferred Lender List with fixed rate options, variable rate options, and interest payment (while in school) options. The selection process considered the needs of our students in the categories of pricing, service, and technology. International students will need a US co-signer in most cases.
Opt into the university’s fee payment plan
Students may opt into the university’s Fee Payment Plan which allows qualified semester fees to be paid in five monthly installments. Interested students can read more here.
