The Fung Institute supports applied research and innovation through the required capstone project of the Masters of Engineering program. Capstone teams work with UC Berkeley engineering faculty and their PhD students to bring fundamental discoveries to bear and solve real-world problems. Projects integrate the technical and business aspects of innovation, helping to advance technology development as well as providing strategies for translating the technology to real markets.
- NoScope (Prof. Laura Waller, EECS): Computational microscope with 3D imaging capability based on a lenseless design.
- Bioinspira (Prof. Seung Wok Lee, BIOE): Smartphone-based breath analyzer for disease diagnosis. Capstone team members have launched a start-up to commercialize this technology as a general sensor platform.
- Planetary Rover Robot: (Prof. Alice Agogino): Tensegrity-based soft robot for use as a planetary rover vehicle. This project has employed M.Eng. capstone teams over multiple years, with each team building on the success of previous teams.
